A load cell is a transducer that converts detected force into an electrical signal associated with the force. It is tremendously important in various industries, including the manufacturing industry and transportation, the healthcare industry, and civil construction. A load cell is supposed to give accurate readings to supervise, regulate, and safeguard different procedures.
A load cell supplied by the load cell manufacturer is, in its simplest form, an element that measures force in the form of weight and translates it into an electrical signal. This signal is then, transmitted to the display or monitoring system where it is analyzed to yield the actual weight or force involved. Load cells come in various types and shapes, but their primary function remains the same: accurate measurement.
How Does a Load Cell Work?
The operating principle of most load cells is grounded on the use of strain gauges. Every time a load is applied to it, the load cell will give a little twist or bend. This deformation is felt by the strain gauges that work through a change of electric resistance in the force being applied. This change is then converted to an electrical signal; the amplitude of which corresponds to the amount of load applied.
Types of Load Cells
Bending Load Cells – Used when a load is squeezed or pressed down on the cell with a specific force. These are found in vehicles, construction equipment, metallurgical industries and any other area that requires regular usage of a device.
Tension Load Cells - Determine the amount of force through tension created when an object is pulled. Applied in the crane scales and tensile testing machines.
Shear Beam Load Cells – They work by measuring shear forces and are highly accurate and well suited for use in weighing systems – for example, platform scales.
S-Type Load Cells – It has the letter ‘S’ look like and it can measure tension and compression force.
Single Point Load Cells – This is used in small weighing machines such as retail scales or kitchen balance.
Applications of Load Cells
Industrial Weighing - These are used in industries and manufacturing companies through the determination of the weight of the products, material or equipment being handled.
Transportation – Used in weighing large trucks and axles, they check on the weight limits permissible on the road.
Some of the Medical Equipment includes; • Patient Lifts-Hospital Beds, ‘Weight ‘and ‘Safe’ factors.
Construction – employed in structural mechanics to determine forces in engineering components, such as beams or bridges, to check for stability and standards.
Monitoring – Load cells are incorporated into automated processes in an attempt to monitor the quality that is being delivered.
Guideline to choose the right load cell
Capacity – Make sure that the load cell has enough carrying capacity to take the maximum load.
Environment – Select load cell with features that can conform to certain conditions for instance high temperatures or moisture.
Type of Load - Depending on your requirement decide if you need it for tension, compression or both.
Precision - Choose a load cell that has an accuracy that is necessary for use in that given project.
